The Art of Pausing®

A creative alternative to meditation and journalling.

Simple pen-and-paper practices that help you step out of constant thinking, create space, and reconnect with yourself.

You don't need artistic experience, the right words, or a perfectly quiet mind. You begin with what's present and let your attention move onto the page.

A Different Way to Pause

The Art of Pausing® was made for the moments when you need space to notice what's actually there.

Overwhelmed, hopeful, restless, joyful, stuck, full of possibility. It doesn't much matter which. Rather than asking you to empty your mind or find the right words, each practice gives your attention somewhere new to go.

As your pen moves across the page, the mental noise softens. You might notice an emotion, recognise a pattern, find a different angle, or simply have a bit more room inside yourself than you did ten minutes ago.

The drawing is not the outcome. The shift it creates is the outcome.

You Don't Need to Be an Artist

This isn't an art class, and there's no right way for the page to look.

The lines and marks are just somewhere for your attention to rest. You're noticing, not performing.

A pen, a sheet of paper, and a willingness to begin are enough.

Why It Works

When attention moves from repetitive thinking into a simple visual and physical task, the brain has a different pattern to follow. Movement, focus, repetition and reflection together can interrupt a familiar thought loop, help you process something, and make room for a perspective you couldn't reach by thinking harder about it.

The practices are deliberately simple. They don't ask you to force calm, and they don't require any skill. They work by giving your mind and your hands something structured to do together.

Meet Yourself Where You Are

You don't have to wait until something is wrong.

The Art of Pausing® starts from whatever feels present, grounded, hopeful, joyful, restless, overwhelmed, stuck, or something you can't quite name. There are twelve emotional pathways in the app, each with its own creative practice and reflection. You begin with the one that feels closest.

Who Made It

I'm Katie Cooper. I've spent more than twenty-five years in business, and I co-direct the technology company that built this app with my husband, Durgan, so it was made by people who actually build software, not assembled from a template.

The practices inside it are the ones I developed for myself, in a pause after a very long stretch of very hard work, and then used with clients for years before any of it went near a phone.
